January 3, 2012 - Genesis 9-11

Symbols are an interesting things are they not? If we look at our lives we see symbols all over the place. We like to use symbols to remind us of something important. Some of the symbols in our everyday life would be cross necklaces, rings, the fish on the back of cars (let alone any other bumper sticker type symbol), pretty much any cause out there has it's own symbol to represent it. If we look at the symbols around us we can realize that those symbols represent something that is important to us.

A rainbow was sent as a symbol of God's covenant with all the earth so that all would have the reminder that God would never destroy all life by flooding the earth again. The rainbow was a reminder that all of Creation is important to God, our Creator. Noah and his family and the animals on the ark were the remnant of all Creation. God's promise with them, continues with us. There are times I am sure over the past year when people have wondered. With all the flooding that has taken place in the southern tier this past fall, it is mind blowing to look at the damage and see how devastating it has been for the families, businesses, churches, organizations that have all been permanently effected by that flooding. I could not imagine what Noah and his family saw as they left that ark. Knowing that they had to wait not just for the water to recede, but they had to wait for the land to dry, in other words for the mud to go away. If you totaled up the amount of time that Noah and the gang spent on the ark it totaled a year. Could you imagine being cooped up in that ark for a year, knowing that when you get out, you have to start over, the work had only just begun for God to restore all of creation.

It did not take long for God to see that it did not work. In our reading over this year we will see the countless times God does something to try to restore creation and have the ability to not be separated from God's children. Scripture tells the story of the dance between God and creation. This was part of the story of that dance.

If we look at our own lives, I be we could outline a story of the dance between God and us. I am sure there are times where we try to take the lead and sooner or later we realize that the only way the dance works is if God is leading. Are you intentionally letting God lead the dance of your life? Or have you taken the spot of the lead? How might a symbol remind you to let God lead the dance? What symbol would you choose?
